At The Counseling Collective, we treat a variety of addictions, whether it be with a substance (such as drugs or alcohol) or behavioral (such as an addiction to sex, watching pornography, gambling, or spending money). We also help support those who are in the recovery stage from an addiction.
What would therapy be like?
Often times an addiction is a result of other underlying life concerns. An initial evaluation will consist of questions about your life, daily stressors, past trauma, relationships with others, triggers, and habits. In sessions after your evaluation, you will learn positive coping skills and therapeutic techniques to help decrease or eliminate you habits with addiction. In therapy sessions, you may also learn to identify and shift negative emotions associated with your addiction (such as stress, anger, worry, sadness, guilt, shame, etc.). Among many other therapeutic approaches, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) will be integrated to help you identify how your thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs are related. Your therapist may choose to teach about self-compassion in your healing journey. You may also be provided with information about community resources that may support treatment. Therapists maintain your confidentiality while respectfully empowering you.
