It’s 6:00 on Monday morning. Diana got 4 hours of sleep last night because her mother, for whom she is the full-time informal caregiver, was having severe hallucinations due to her progressing dementia. She hasn’t eaten since lunch yesterday, and eating only 2 meals per day has become the norm. She feels guilty for being tired, resentful of her mom’s extensive demands on her time and energy, and hurt that no one seems to notice or appreciate how hard she works to balance her personal life and caregiver duties.

Because Diana had to quit her paid position as a parking attendant to take care of her mother full-time, she is experiencing major anxiety around her family’s financial health. Healthcare and insurance have only risen in cost and it feels like her health is worsening along with her mom’s. She has noticed her own significant (unintended) weight loss, persistent sadness, and lack of interest in activities she used to enjoy. Her friends are wondering why she has “fallen off the face of the Earth,” and her closest friend who knows about the stress her caregiver role has caused keeps telling her to get professional help from someone experienced in this area.
